Post subject: "You are too fabulous NOT to be a working girl"

Last night my girlfriend and I decided to hang out in this sleepless city and have some fun. We both are single, smart and fabulous local girls. Having traveled to many places in the world and lived in other countries, I am worldly. I am a senior executive working for an international company and my girlfriend runs her own little fashion boutique.

We went to Malone's first, danced a bit, couldn't stand being hit on by all the UFOs (Ugly, Fat, Old) there, we wandered around, checked out Mint and then ended up in Judy's on Tong Ren Lu. The music was great and guys there were cute. We thought we could have a good time there. Very soon a white guy approached me and danced with me. He was cute and somewhat sexy. I gave him a blank and friendly smile. He whispered into my ears, "You are very pretty". Then he said to me, "Do you work here?" "Excuse me?" "Are you a working girl?" Being a smartass, I said, "Oh yeah, I must not disappoint you, must I? I am a call girl, but I don't answer calls and I am priceless..." He then said, "All the beautiful women here are working girls, it's so depressing. You are too pretty NOT to be a working girl. But if you are not - smart and funny as you are, I am gonna make you marry me..." This was THE worst and most humiliating proposal I have ever heard in my life. And this was the third time in the same night me being asked the same question - are you a working girl?

What the hell is wrong with this city? Since when did all the white guys think all the fabulous, yellow women in this city were all whores? Oh well, given such a depressing dating scene, I think I am going to seriously start investigating the information on Sperm Bank...

This is interesting. First of all, many losers around here in Shanghai, especially the newcomers. It is actually a good thing to be able to identify those losers up front. Second, what do you expect going to debauchery places such as bars, especially girlie bars?

Good point. I guess that's how we all become cynical and jaded here... but if we don't go to bars, where do we go to blow off steam at night? It's Shanghai, not some place near Mount Everest...

Well, you could always go dancing or karaoke (and when I say that I mean real dancing, not "exotic", and in karaoke I mean the kind in which you actually go singing - jeez, I really do have to qualify things more precisely given how these things can be so easily misinterpreted in this town!). The gym's also an option; I know of a few girls who do yoga and enjoy it. You could also do something more esoteric, even; when I went to go check out fencing clubs last night, the guys running the salles I checked out both claimed that fencing was fast becoming an "in" thing.

I could shoot suggestions out all day, but the best way to figure out which one would be best suited to you would be if you just flat out mentioned what kinds of activities you were interested in.

Phoenix i know how that feels. although im not much of a clubber, when i hung out with non-asian friends or with my non-asian ex, i got all the staring on the street. I never used to feel self conscious back in the US, now I guess with all the scandalous scenes here, when being spotted in such scenario, I always felt like "one of those girls that only date lao wai..." what the hell.

most bars on Tongren lu, not Malones, are filled with bar-girls, they work for the bar and are there to make guys buy drinks, and perhaps some have other means of making money.........read up a little on nightlife here, there's different bars for different people's tastes.....it's rather thoughtful of China to offer nightlife that can accomodate so many different tastes, otherwise you just end up with the same old meat-markets everywhere.

Had to read through to understand what "working girl" means... I was thinking Melanie Griffith & Harrison Ford... Smile

So to catch up, and to prepare for my family's relocation, may I ask if all places frequented by expat are flooded with working girls? Is it a night thing (e.g. nightclubs) or 24 hours (e.g. Starbucks)?

(Hmm... guess it's not easy to get replies... after all, who would want to say they know all about it...Smile)

I guess we should feel flattered after all - one day when I woke up having no brains left, I could still make a living in this beautiful yet sinful city LOL... well since barhopping is pretty much off my recreation list, good luck to those who still secretly hope to find a non-working-girl girl at bars - we are out of there! Can any one recommend something interesting to do? I already spend one hour a day working out... and Karaoke isn't my thing - can't sing. Fencing sounds fancy... where can I find it? I heard go carting is fun? Anybody knows a good place to learn how to dance? (real dancing, btw)

momof2: this is a bar thing and almost exclusively a few ex-pat/tourist/businessman oriented bars. you and your children are safe at McD's, Starbucks and the supermarket.

As far as knowing goes, even the blind here can see what is going on in these places. There is nothing subtle about them.

Not all expat hangouts are frequented by working girls too - you just have to pick the right places. The nicer bars and pubs are fine but if you go to the sleazy places on maoming lu or tongren lu then yes you probably will find girls there. I never go to those bars though so I can't really comment. But it's not really a problem if you choose your venue wisely.

I agree that your choice of venue is questionable. If you are so fabulous, why are you being seen in those type of bars?

Good question, Lunadi. I guess because I am a working girl?

Anyway the guy was a mighty idiotic jerk, you should always treat a woman - even a bargirl - with respect, like a girlfriend. Even if you pay her.

Very true...I am in a 5 year relationship (both expats) and I never veer toward the Tongren/Maoming scene for the very reasons outlined in this post i.e. UFO's & and geeks who think they are a class above the rest.

It's horrible to stereotype anything (I'm guilty as sin stating that Maoming/Tongren are dives) but lets face facts - there are expats here (many fresh off the boat and many who arent) who think that they are goods gift to [wo]men, and really when you think about it its laughable.

If I saw half the antics of expats in bars that I do here back home - I'd think about changing my local!

This guy was so out of line, especially because you already told him you are not that kind of girl. What is more, he should have more respect as he is a guest here, right?

I have been in some wierd situations here too, like one time I was with a girl from Beijing and we arranged to go and meet my friend who is CBC and a lawyer in a bar. When we turned up at the bar, the CBC friend was wearing jeans and a red strappy vest, the Beijing girl assumed she was a working girl. Even though I told the Beijing girl that the CBC girk was a lawyer, the situation remained awkward all evening...

And many other times as well...

Anyway, try not to waste your anger on some impolite guy- do you think he is still worrying about it now?

Perhaps next time you two girls could go with a guy friend, it might be safer?

Thank you again, teanosugar. No anger anymore. Just making observations and sharing experiences. Life is full of surprises especially in a place like Shanghai and that's why we love/hate this city. Being adults, we learn quickly how to forget and forgive in order to maintain that inner peace, hence the loss of edges (and a little tad faith in humanity Cool ). Having a guy friend as a chaperon is cool. Still we want to do that "girls' night out" thing. Will be more careful when choosing the venue next time. Any suggestion is welcome.

Fencing? There are 2 salles in the city: Janus and Power:

www.janusfencing.com
www.powerfencing.com

Power Fencing is located a 16 RMB cab ride away from people's square (I think it's near a line 4 station). It's the smaller of the two clubs (only 2 strips - a fencing "arena" is called a "strip"), but the guy running it is a really great marketer - even though they've only been operating for a year and a half, they've already had Jackie Chan, Michael Schumaker, the FIE chairman, a Malaysian pop star, and the 2004 Woman's Epee Olympic silver medalist visit the place!

Janus is near Yan An Xi Lu metro station, about 2 blocks away. It's a little larger (3 strips) and more incognito. Supposedly the saber coach there used to fence for the Shanghai competitive squad for 10 years. Nobody there fences epee, though.

Like I mentioned before, supposedly fencing is one of the new "in" things, along with salsa, yoga, and tango (?). No clue if it's true or not, but I've heard multiple people say it is Smile

I try to stay in the smaller neighborhood pubs & low key bars myself. Hate the pick up joints like those on tongren & moaming. If you're interested in some out-of-box weekend activities, try sailing which is about as novel as fencing & those "other" activities. I just joined the SBYC & plan to spend as much time as i can on the water this coming season. Feel free to tag along if you're interested.

this reminds me of the personal ads u c from shanghainess hoes on asiaxpat. it just needs the last line "u have to pay to succeed"

--------
""Do you work here?" "Excuse me?" "Are you a working girl?" Being a smartass, I said, "Oh yeah, I must not disappoint you, must I? I am a call girl, but I don't answer calls and I am priceless..." either the guy was a loon or ur talking crap lady, no guy says u r smart and funny after seeing u dance and some meaningless line he didnt hear over the music anyhow.

R u sure ur not just trying to ply ur wares here, oh little fabulous local "girl"

If you need a donor. Rather than go to the sperm bank I would be happy to help.
I can send a photo if you like and also used to donate semen when at university a few years ago!

PM me if you're interested.....

Very Happy
