Come on now, I would understand posting a personals when you are a little older and don't get out much. But you're 24! I'm sure you'll have better luck finding a girlfriend out and about in Shanghai than here in this forum. You're new in town, so put yourself out there. Get out of the house, meet people, make new friends! Don't sit around and wait for a girlfriend to magically appear. Enjoy Shanghai, it has plenty to offer. |

but do you think it's funny to go out alone, I don't even have friends in Shanghai, I arrive a month ago, and I still don't know anyone.
I don't know if you guys have a magic method, but I'm not the kind of person that walks alone and when I see someone I go and talk to him. |

Really, I don't blame you narcosis. Especially, just arriving and not having enough of the language to even tell a taxi driver where to go. You are still in shock. A girlfriend might be a door to the city.. someone who knows language and places and such as well as companion in an obviously lonely and scary time. It makes sense.
However, being in so dependent on a new girlfriend, you might put yourself in a position of being vulnerable in the wrong way and find yourself regretting it later. One thing you might do is put out for a language exchange partner or hire a city guide for a day. This way, the relationship has some form and you can choose to stay in or get out without hurting either of you too much. Things might progress a little more organically with this as a starting poin and you might learn something interesting. There have been lots of girls that would like to city guide for a day just to practice their English. Something to think about. |

I think that from the point of view of someone who does not know anyone here, does not speak the language, and does not know where to go. Having a girlfriend might help in some of these areas.. but there are other issues obviously. |

Have you registered at your country's consulate. They may have upcoming events for you to attend. Sometimes that could be a good way to meet people from your own country who have been here a while and can show you the ropes around town. They can also introduce you to some of their friends, which might help improve your current social situation. |

For finding friends you can also attend other events organised by chamber of commerce or events with a topic which interests you.
Basically my job is in public relations, therefore I like to speak to almost everyone on the street, work, bus and so on. Of course it's easy because I speak the language as well, but in general university students like to practice English and you can always start by asking directions. People don't bite, unless you force them into a corner.
No as an answer you already have, YES you can get!
When I came to China the first time 4 years ago I didn't speak either, but just spoke to almost everyone (more or less of same age) and got many friends, who I still contact frequently today.

the idea of a grilfriend seems good since i'm looking for a serious relationship.
Everything here is in chinese, the idea of only a few people speak english here shocked me.

totally totally agree with michale, his words r soooooo right and sincerly. so narcosis, besides post an ad here, meanwhile go outside to meet ppl, go to the uni go to the english concern, there r so many places r waiting u to find, use ur head to tell to distinguish then choose a right one. maybe u can also choose a school to learn some basic mandarin why not? for ur better survive here. walk in two legs. good luck. |

Meeting girls is so easy here, you don't need to talk to them, they will talk to you instead as long as you have a foreign face. My bf regrets he had a gf before he comes here as there are so many choices here! Well, but things are a bit tricky. You will get more girls' attention if you already have gf. So don't make yourself sound desperate here, go out and play the game. |

Yes, Michael has some seriously good advice. Just watch out for the women who obviously have a plan 'A'. I might venture to say that if you are between the sheets in less than a week, then you have taken the bait, and phase 1 of plan 'A' is under way. Always use a condom - there are 2 young ladies who are in long term relationships here in the office and both have been forced into abortions in the past 3 weeks....must be spring ! Kind of using a hammer to kill an ant in terms of birth control...... I quizzed my fiancee about human biology classes at high school, sex education etc. and she advised that it was still pretty much a big mystery for them, and they were oblivious to their own fertility and birth control methods. Sigh. |
