| Post subject: HangZhou(HZ) Weekend Trip (May 15-16) |
Anyone interested in an informa trip to Hangzhou with other Shanghai Expat members? While not associated with teh website, several mambers and myself are putting together an informal weekend trip to go visit beautiful West Lake and other places around HangZhou.
Tentative plans are to leave morning of May 15 (saturday) and return May 16 (Sunday) We will either go by chartered bus (if we get enough people; need 20) or chartered van(s). Trains are an option for those who may choose to meet us in HangZhou. We plan to hire Eglish speaking guides to take us around HZ part of each day so that we have some time to sightsee and relax too. It will be a western style relaxing weekend, NOT a Chinese style visit everything weekend.
We are working on transport and hotels at this point but need to find out how many people are truly interested in going. this means a deposit will be collected before we confirm final numbers. Anyone interested, please reply and/or PM me. Thanks!

Depending on how much you are budgeting for hotel, I'm interested in two places / one double room. |

Hmmm, many things to cover to make it a good one, eating, staying, transportation, attractions, and etc.
Will you manage all by yourselves one item after another?
Or outsource the whole trip to an professional agent?
Or assign to several members who plan to go?
And how about ones intending to go?
Any ID, passport required to present in advance?
Any contract concerning emergence, insurance to sign? |

One more question, to yu888, regarding your post,
what does "informal weekend" mean exactly, and there should some namely "formal"?
oh, one more to you, why you put three digits after "yu", instead of two or four? just now i entered four unselfconsciously |

Oh I am assisting Yu to do some corresponding acts.
It will be leaving on sat early morning and back to Shanghai on Sunday.
The whole trip will be outsource to a local agent... which will include logistic accomodation and sight seeing. Will be more relax then moving around from place to place. Likely one or two places each day. Any special request like prefer staying in a single room alone will have to be voice out to Yu as early as possible, so that we can book the relevant room. Do not know how much is the price now as it all depends on the number of participants, the more people, the cheaper it will be. I believed the trip should be around 800 to max 1000 rmb per pax (if you are staying alone, much cheaper if 2 in one room as the room is the most expensive item in this trip), which will inclusive of accomodation, logistic and hopefully meals too. Again, prices are depending on the no. of participants. Oh, tentaively we will be staying a 4 star Hotel call Huang Long Fan Dian which is near the West Lake... I think.
Insurance stuff like what smurfette has mentioned.. is not included in the trip as we are not professional, just treat it as a couple of friends going out for a weekend trip. I believed no passport is required right?! |

That sounds good to me! Did not see anything so far around Shanghai and wanted to go there anyway.
Informal is always the best. Please put me on the list. I could stay in a double room with some other girl, no problem I guess.
Maybe we can discuss next saturday, if I can make it to the coffee meeting.

P.S. Thanks in advance for this great idea and the efforts you put in so far! |

Wesley, thx a lot for the info and what you've been working on so far.
And you are right about that we should take it easy, shall we? After all, it's just a weekend event, and to the worst, even an earthquake took place(which could be as IMpossible as it rained cash! ) it is no big deal for human to go without any supply for the bottom line of fourty-eight hours. Hehe, scary?
As to the residence issue, I just checked the website for hotels,
http://www.hangzhou.gov.cn/main/gb/tourist/market/catalog_2763.jsp
and their E-map version online, the hotel is wonderful but one thing to bear in mind is whether it is not near to the lakeside.
My last visit to HZ was the Lunar New Year four years ago, and stayed at Lakeview Hotel 杭州望湖宾馆, which is also a four-star one also listed on that website, just followed HuangLong Hotel. This one, newly built(viewed four years ago), and the most advantage of it, as the name suggested, it's really just a stone's throw from West Lake, and its restaurant actually did have an amazing view of it, especially in the evening. So as a visitor, you can go to West Lake at anytime as you like, early morning, midnight, and etc, just on foot, without considering any transportation issue.
HuangLong is located on Shu Guang Road, according to their map, not far from West Lake, but not sure if it is within walking distance. But it's classic-Chinese-Garden architecture is really impressive!! Reminding me of Suzhou Gardens....
Well, just some personal ideas. So far as I know that HZ local government has been undertaking huge project on West Lake and has enlarged the whole area of attractions to twice as it used to be, thus not sure if what I saw four years still remained the same today. Anyone with more updated info? |

Ok all, so far to what I have gathered.
Yu888, myself, Izanami, ShanghaiKid, MaryR, Anne, female25poet, Dyniquee. Are you all bringing any partners or else it will make us 8 of the confirmed!
*Not so clear signals* - Smurfette, paranoid, quasi, slowbiker. Are you people still interested?
Verbal Interest - Jenming told me yesterday to keep him in mind.
Anymore? I will have to discuss in details with Yu888 soon.
It will be fun, wonder can we do some fishing there too? Read a book while the fish nibbles on our baits... as lunch?! Ha ha. Life can be so so good. |

I went to hangzhou yesterday with some friends and family members. Apart from the factor that the weather was awful, we still had a good time there. Here are some tips for you guys.
1. Hotel
Huang long hotel is a bit far from the "new" west lake. The distance from HL hotel to west lake is like the distance from people's square to plaza 66. And... Huang long hotel doesnt really look good from outside.
The one that smurfette recommended is well worth a try.
2.Recreation
The newly launched hang zhou xin tian di is impressive. A very good atmosphere for relaxing. Unlike the one in Shanghai, it seemed that nobody tended to wear masks and show off in hang zhou xin tian di.
3.Transportation
Well, a total nightmare for those who plan to drive to hangzhou. The highway is more crowded than anyone could ever think of. 3 hours for a single trip is a must. We didnt try the taxi in hangzhou. Their driving style seemed to be even crazier.
4.Sightseeing
Since it was a one day trip and mainly for relaxing, we didnt go to any of those tourist attractions except walking long the west lake in the drizzling rain for a while.
Hope you can have a good time there.
And here are some rough pix that i took in HZ |

The new westlake area would be ideal. we will look into this in the next few days and have "real" info by the coffee meeting this coming saturday. I will discuss this with Wesley and figure things out soon. This holiday has gotten a bit in the way of planning but we will make it work. Since we are outsourcing to a travel company, hey will arrange guides etc for the various points of interest, though I personally like having free time in such a setting.
Thanks Paanoid for the input nd pics. I can't wait! Do you wanna come with us too?
Wesley- MaryR is her, plus 2 adults and 1 baby. |

I am still interested (single person). Unfortunately I cannot come to this Saturday's coffee meeting because I have to work. Please keep me updated (Ed you have my e-mail).

Ok, we are getting the info in today and will start getting confirmations tomorrow to lock things in. After some deliberations, we are still electing to use a chartered vehicle (a 19 seat Toyota Coaster Shuttle Bus) to get us to HangZhou and back. We are tentatively looking at an older 4 star hotel in HangZhou or a newer 3 star which are near the lake but not right on it. (amazing how much difference i price you get)
Anyhow, the estimated cost, based on double occupancy (two persons per room) will be approximately, 450/500rmb per person will include chartered shuttle to and from HangZhou as well as intermediate tourist spots in and around West lake. It will also cover hotel expenses (double Occupancy) as well as the driver's costs.
If some well-travelled folks want to just meet us in HangZhou, as a few have expressed interest to, we can arrange to meet there as well so we can have a HangZhou Coffee meeting !
So, I need confirmations form interested parties atthis point. i have confirmations from the following:
Wesley, Me, Anne, Mary R (+2 + baby), Dyniquee, snoopy, tx2sh
Maybe's include: Izanami, shanghaikid, slowbiker(+1), lawdude, henrychinaski
We plan to cap off at 16 adults.
Thanks! |
