| Post subject: XBox 360 Questions |
I want to buy one over the PS3, due to the price and the huge library of games that it already has, hence starting a new thread dedicated to the 360.
1. Price wise I have been offered one from a store on Nanjing Xi Lu for 2500, is this too much and what should I expect from a bundle at this price?
2. I have an LCD TV so will want the component cable to get the best possible picture, I heard these were bundled as standard with the 20gig systems but here they seem to split the packs and sell the as an optional extra at around 200 RMB?
3. Are most systems 2nd hand here and of the Japanese variety?
4. A mate recommended I buy one that has been manufactured after March 2007, as these seem to be the most reliable to date with less overheating problems.
5. Will the stores offer any kind of warranty on the modded machines, especially if the red lights of death come up?
6. Lastly, has anyone managed to get onto XBox Live with their modded machine?
TY. |

i have had an offer for 2800rmb so i reckon 2.5k is not too expensive
re warranty, i've never had an issue but i bet you can forget about that. only chance, if something breaks, is to nag the guy that sold it to you. make sure you get a proper receipt with the address of the story and the name of the guy that sold it to you. at the end of the day you're looking to buy a machine that has been modified, and i doubt that here, you will have a return or repair warranty.
best bet would be to buy an original machine in hong kong when you're there the next time and , if something should break, return it there....
have a look at www.gamespot.com and their forums, you should get plenty of help and useful info there as well. I keep reading and hearing that there are problems with modified machines for certain games but not all of them... |

^ Was that at the store in Beijing Lu that offered you the machine at that price as that was the same price they offered me last week? Ref HK did toy with the idea of getting an original but they are heavy bastards to lug back through customs and I don't know when I am going back there.
I guess its just pot luck whether or not you pick up a good system or not.
I use gamespot quite often for game reviews so thanks for the link, I have also used http://forum.teamxbox.com/ to swot up. |

Some information that might be of use.
I bought an xbox 360 about 2 weeks ago from the "cyber Mall" corner of Huangpi lu and huihai lu, somwhere up on the second level. For 2800 I got the unit that has been chipped to play copy games, 2 controllers and the power supply suitable for China(plus the original one aswell). They also threw in 10 games.
My system is from Hong Kong according to the sales girl. I had to change the operating language into english upon start up but thats easy.
It did come with the component cables for HD but i think i got lucky on that one.
I dont like my chances at warranty if anything goes wrong but I assume one of the shops selling these things could arrange repairs.
I have not hooked up xbox live but will get around to it in the next few weeks.
Good luck and bargain hard. |

^ That sounds encouraging Ashley, I have been there a couple of times, not a bad deal you got there did it have the HD and were the controllers wired or wireless? |

Better use a VGA connection. Much better graphics on a LCD TV. I used both and IMO VGA is better.

You'd better wait for the new SKU with integrated HDMI port. It should come out before the holiday season with a 50$ price drop. I don't know if the price drop will be implemented here or not though.

I used to DL stuff from XBL but since they released a patch banning modified consoles I didn't dare to try. I hear that some new firmware modifications can circumvant this. You should ask the shop. |

^Its a 32" WS, Alas I do not have a HDMI port, my TV runs at 720p and 1080i so would a VGA connection be okay for that? |

Sure, you just need to buy a VGA connector for the 360. They shoulb be available in any video game shop. |

I am waiting for the new revised motherboard (not the Elite - late this year) until purchasing.
If you have had it "modded" (DVD drive flashed)you will be banned from live. |

^When, Where have you seen the press release for the new motherboard?Do you mean the 65 Nm Falcon, or this the one with the new 45nm processor?
Is this the one ?

Now if I wait for this one, there's gonna be one hell of a pile up of games to play before I even get to the new release's.

Will it be the Microsoft XBOX360 "Works, finally" Edition?
The 65nm chips are out. Every Xbox 360 having manifacturing date of 07-2007 or later should already have the new 65nm chips in it (codename Falcon). Microsoft have been testing these new X360 since last January and since there haven't been issues they started the production last month
to determine if the system has the new 65nm chipset.
A label on the Xbox 360 box actually lists the word "Zephyr", which they say is the codename for the Xbox 360 Elite mainboard (see picture). Those looking to buy a system with the new 65nm chipset should be on the lookout for codename "Falcon" in the same place on the label.
Dont shoot the messenger its only what I've read. |

You have to check the owner's manual, but in lieu of an HDMI port, component video is likely the best chance to get real 720p signals in AND displayed. But, not all component ports are necessarily wired internally to process signals higher than 480p. My Hitachi has 2 480p, and 2 720p component video connections. Last time I checked, the only way to get 1080i/p in AND displayed was through an HDMI connector, but I have not checked for 2 years.
Just because a TV says "HD compatible", "HD compliant", "HDTV", does not mean it can display 720p/1080i/p. It can just mean that it will accept the signal in, but them compress it to 480p for the actual display. |

I posted a question about bringing my son's 360 to Shanghai in a different section of this forum and was told to ask the experts.
He wants to use xbox live and doesn't care about copied games.
Is it possible to get a chinese adapter from microsoft and used our current 360 there? Can we still connect to xbox live? If so, how?
Also, what's the best way (ie cheapest) to get the ebox here? Can we bring in our luggage or ship via sea or air?
PS - I am a xbox idiot, but my son can translate. |

Cheers Coffee I will probaly try using a component cable first.
ShanghaiHokie, My friend from HK brought his Xbox ( Original ) and connected it through his wireless router, once he was set he was ready to log in as he has paid his subscription fess already to use Live. Remember the faster the connection the better.
How to connect http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/connecttolive/xbox360/default.htm
If it was me I would hand carry the console on the plane leave the original box at home incase of customs, but I onestly do not think there would be a problem, and put all the accesaries and games etc in the hold luggage. |

Thanks Dazza et al. I think we will take your advice and bring the console over in our carry-ons. Also, I think we can still access xbox live with our current box and only need a new chinese compatible power brick.
Let me know if you have any other pearls of wisdom.
Cross your fingers... |

I don't know if you can swap out the power brick or not, but you can keep the US power brick and buy an 650~800W voltage transformer once you get here.
'Real' games sold in mainland China come from Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Japan (there is no mainland China version of Xbox). Microsoft would not provide me with a list of which games from those regions that are compatible with a US or Euro Xbox. Some games are region independent, some games are only sold in certain countries, so to be safe you can consider stocking up on games before you get here.
I've seen people hand carry xbox 360's through customs in the original box, put them in their carry on, and also put them in checked luggage with extra padding around them, and have never heard of any problems. The actual cost of the console is less than the minimum declared value limit, and as long as one is not bringing things over for resale (e.g. you plan to take the item back out of China), taxes should not be an issue.
Xboxlive will be a little slower here than if playing in the US or Europe due to lag, but it is still entertaining, and it's a free way to talk to your friends back home. |

Coffee, thanks for the info. We will tackle the power issue when we arrive, but will carry-on the console and games. Xbox live is the only reason we're bringing it, so he will have to adjust to the lag. We have that now sometimes.
I'll return after we've entered and tell the tail. |

Did you find out about the brick? Do 240V Asian/Euro bricks output the same DC current as a USA brick and is the connector on the concole the same? |

Don't you have a PS3? Shouldn't the PS2 games by and large work fine on that? |

funnily enough, while the ps3 games are region free, the ps3 only plays ps2 games from the same region( and not even all of them )...having the hk ps3 and plenty of european or american originals this wont work cant have it all i guess |

^ Fiddler my Son. It just so happens that I have a European PS2 made in Japan fitted with Messiah Chip that will play anything, also fitted a new laser recently but someone else is interested in the whole package at present so out of respect they will have first refusal. Will keep you updated. |
