| Post subject: Executive Assistant Position - International Company |
My husband and I may be relocating back to Shanghai (we did live there for 6 months - 3 years ago) from Canada. I'm presently working part time for President of a company....and if we do relocate would be interested in working for an executive of an International company. Would it be difficult to find such a position...necessary to know some Mandarin? I notice that a lot of the ads posted on expat web sites actually specify that they want some young chicky...is this common? Perhaps the American or European companies don't have the gall to actually say the candidate has to be under 30!
Old & wanted in Canada.

Hi There. I would not doubt that the EA should be fluent in manderin but age and beauty may be of less important than say marketing or sales professionals. But compared to canada, you will most likely see that the EA should be between 28-35 and attractive. This is China, and discrimination for hiring ... well it's just not the same here ... you know.
But hey, I'm generalizing so maybe you still can find something. Don't5 wan't to bust your bubble or anything |

Wouldn't one expect an executive assistant to know something about the environment they work in ? Something more helpful than "I lived there once three years ago" ? |

Thanks for the response - I suppose. Well, obviously my resume provides all the information a prospective employer would require - I simply mentioned that I had lived in Shanghai briefly as an "aside" . I have visited various cities in China a dozen times on extended business trips...but have NOT WORKED there!! I am familiar with the "environment"...just haven't actually searched for a job in Shanghai. |

Sorry. Better update that resume to "Also visited some other cities and can read street signs. Sorry, no local knowledge, no network of friends, no acquaintance with local businesses who can do work or supply goods, I can't help you with my in-depth knowledge of Shanghai or China nor can I speak Chinese so no translation and I can't do anything that requires talking to anyone outside our office but if this were the US I could sue you for age and sex discrimination."
Lots of highly-placed executives are looking for people with exactly those qualifications, I'm sure. |

I am currently hiring an EA for a country manager but I can already tell you, being an EA in China requires you to at least speak moderate Mandarin because you need to use it in your daily work. It's going to be difficult for you to find a job in that function here. |

Okay, thanks for the feedback. I suspected as much. Oh, well, on to plan B - volunteer work of some sort. |

Wow, what an angry, bitter person you are...no doub you are the one with no friends!! Focus, focus - the question was how is the job market for someone who doesn't know any Mandarin? I've since got replies from Canadian friends who live in Shanghai. No need for any more of your useless information. |

First time I read that here and it wasnt directed at me. Glad to see that at least it was directed at my buddy tired tiger, so it's all in the familia.
Good.
Anyway, if you need any help finding voluntary work let me know. I'm in touch with several charity organizations and they are always in need of good people. |
