Don't you think its understandable through? Chances are the local cannot speak a word of English... so by what standards can they judge the teaching ability of the person? In particular when many schools have such dubious standards. At least if they look the part they can speak English...

I think dfoo has a point here. It is hard for anyone to judge a language if he/she does not know it. It is not just the Chinese-English but for us as well. If we were to look for a teacher of foreign language (French, German, Gaelic etc) and not know what is good/bad, we too will be misled in many ways, I suspect.

Coming back to the topic, Chinese people seem to have the mentality that anything foreign is good or better than local - cars, clothing, branded items etc and this incude the foreign looking expats, thus the higher pay, to put it simply if the employer is local. If one uses a local company as an example, would a foreign expat with an Asian face get paid the same as a caucasian expat? The topic here is foreigners vs local but since the colour of skin is brought in, what about foreigners with Asian faces? sbergman touched on teachers, but what about other professions?

It is not news that some schools hire caucasians so that they will look foreign enough for their clients. And to please their clients, Chinese, Korean, Japanese etc who would not be too happy if the school that is suppose to teach their kids English is filled with Chinese looking people regardless of if the Chinese looking ones are native English speakers or not.

That's my observation as well. My students are not uneducated peasants, quite the opposite. These are some of the best educated and wealthiest folks in Shanghai. The white teacher is part of a package that includes a German sports car, French art, and cultural trips to London. I also don't think this is uniquely Chinese. When Americans were trying to prove they were cultured, they hired British tutors and French chefs. We know how that turned out. Smile I think China is just going through it's nouveau rich stage and at some point there will be a reverse embrace of all-things Chinese.

What's interesting to me is that the focus all seems to be westward. Are there things that the Chinese borrow or emulate from other Asian countries?

Goinbg back to the original subject,
The answer would depend on the individual. If he can accept local pay and be happy with it, why not?

Many new college graduates can not get a job.

RMB3000 means huge to them.

The average salary of those who get a job and work their asses off is about 1500rmb/month.

Shame on you all for arguing for such a long time whether or not foreigners should get paid more!!!

Yes, please stop asking some one else's opinion to justify your unsatisfied pay check. Jeez...

Foreigners do not get paid more than locals.

Unless you are only talking of specific categories like English "teachers"(mind the quotation marks) and DJs.

FL, please clarify this seemingly moronic statement before I tell you what I really think.

I think he means that if a foreigner and a chinese person are in the same position in a company, they make similar salaries. I think it might be true from a very high level on, I mean if a company has a Chinese GM in its Shanghai office and a foreign GM in its Beijing office, their salaries are probably similar. But the expat package has much more than salary, so alltogether it is still a lot more.

I get paid 3000/mo here.

I thought I could tough it out for the experience and thats what I am doing. Unfortunately, after 9 months I now know I have completely wasted my time and even large Chinese companies are run with about the same amount of expertise as...as....as......I don't know I can't think of a phrase rediculous enough but I have worked for tiny tiny companies in the US during high school and college that are just so much better run its not even funny.

I would like to take this opportunity to start thanking the board for the support, the advice, the hazing, and everything else this past year, because I am going -home- in July!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It wasn't a total waste. At least you know what not to do when you eventually are running your own company.

Employees are an expense item, so a business will pay them if they add value.

Yep that's right. And from what I have seen so far in the past 14 years, one foreigner has about the same productivity as 60 - 100 Chinese. So yes, they should be paid a sh1tload more. Let alone the stress increasing fact that you have to deal with 90% complete morons here. Even bloody kaffers are smarter.

Not just productivity, but also ability to think logically.

The Assist and I are in the US for a few ... damn. I'd forgotten what civilization was like. Toothless hillbillies from the Ozarks are better socialized than the smartest Shanghainese person. You guys ? China = one immense bunch of losers. The teenage black kids serving Whoppers at the malls here are more capable than the mayors of Shanghai. The world's biggest sick joke, China.

Boy am I looking forward to coming back Shocked
