hmm...we are heading over in a couple of weeks and are planning on bringing some things with us. my husband was over and back last month with no issue. i hope no one wants my fruit snacks, pringles or trix cereal! |

Today they had dogs sniffing all the suitcases and then each suitcase was scanned after you picked it up. The dog got about 10 suitcases... |

I just arrived PuDong airport on 03 July after a brief summer holiday in the US with 2 BIG bags at 25+ kils each -
Both were mainly full with food-stuffs. I had no idea there would potentially be any problems as I and my family have ALWAYS brought back bunches of food when we return - you know - the favorite brands / flavors / etc.
Sometimes the four of us (wife & 2 little kids) come back with 8 backs - when we fly JAL each bag can weigh up to 30kgs - thats a lot of stuff!!!
This time I bought back coffee, peanut butter, chocolate chips, big bottles of shampoo & lotion, etc. etc. etc. (No fresh foods - all dried and packaged foods...)
I really wasn't worried as I knew I wasn't bringing anything illegal anyway. I would have been really bummed and pissed off if the snagged the coffee!
Bags were sniffed by the dogs and X-rayed at customs exit but thankfully no problems. Everybody's bags went through the scanner - but they stopped no one at the time I was going through. I came in about 9:30PM and the exit wasn't terribly busy.
Good luck... I guess it's a crap shoot.
We will try again when the family comes back in mid-August.

What food you tried to bring in got confiscated?
Just scanned the topic quickly and everyone got through without many problems.
I leave in a couple of weeks and want to bring coffee, Belgian Whisky, Beer and chocolate....I don't think that would be any problem... |

Chheese often gets picked up at the X-rays early on b/c its density in many cases is similar to that of C-4. Meats are listed as banned import so just beware. Alcohol beyond personal allowance is dutiable so they Do catch people top get those taxes and penalties occassionally. |

I've got a question. People are asked at random to send their luggages through the x-ray machine. If you have undeclared items that should have been, then you would need to pay the duty on the said items. That's fine and honkey dorey!
But the last time I came through Pudong there were no customs declaration form to fill out. So....how can we declare items when there are no forms to declare it on? Didn't get scanned myself so I'm not complaining...but still. |

Hi MimiRocks, I was in T2 with my luggage filled with food stuffs: herbal concoctions, homemade chilli paste, jam, powder formed drink...all luggages were scanned but I was safe. |

July 3rd arrived, had lot of hungarian salami, every suitcase got x-rayed, no problem with fermented salami.

So are cigarettes. In april 2008 I was bringing in lots of lots of cigs from HK, did not want to risk anything, so I went through red channel and declared all. They just asked if is it for my needs, I said yes, and they let me go without apying anything... |

Arrived at PVG today from Vancouver with 2 X 1 kg of Tim Horton coffee, 2 boxes of unscented Tide, and a slab of Strongbow in tins. They were scanning everything. I went through with no problems. The people watching the machine seemed to be too bored to bother getting up.
BTW: If you hold an Air Canada Elite or SuperElite card you are entitled to a massive checked baggage allowance - check the AC web site! |

Its probably about time I went home, been 4 years now...
Suppose, I could always ask Paolo @ Casanova, he goes back more often than I do...
Getting bad, my mom emailed me some house prices in Milnerton, good god, they're going Northern Suburbs on me...
On topic - last time I came back from Singapore, and Thailand (both this year), I brought back tons of spices and herbs, all no issues. All sealed though, and in hand carry.
I have noted that they are getting tres anal these days over anything, so usual advice would be don't do anything until after the olympics (tm).

We came in via Air Canada July 12th and had the "massive checked baggage allowance" ~ 7 bags of 32kg ea, filled with goodies including 2 HUGE tub of Parmesan grated cheese & quite a few pounds of chocolate. We also hand carried our Wii + Fit in original box ~ put everything through the x-ray with no problems. The guys there even help us putting them through and loaded our carts afterwards. I said "Thank you" and the guy replied "My pleasure" in perfect English - for a moment I was wondering if he was an ABC!
There was only one guy watching the xray machine. They seem eager to get everyone through as the line was building up.
I was impressed by their service at the xray check out. |

Shanghai, tightens transportation security
SHANGHAI - CHINA'S largest city and the host of a dozen Olympic football matches started tightening security over the weekend at airports and train stations, reports in state-run media said.
Surveillance systems also are being installed on Shanghai's subway trains, a report said on Monday.
The measures go along with increased security in Beijing, where the Olympic Games will begin Aug 8. The Chinese government is worried about foreign terrorist plots as well as political prοtests from domestic critics such as Uighurs in the restive western province of Xinjiang and t¡betans.
Bags at Shanghai's Pudong and Hongqiao airports were being searched at entrances to terminals for explosive, flammable, biochemical or radioactive materials, the Shanghai Daily newspaper reported.
The newspaper said passengers at Shanghai South Railway Station will go through a luggage check before entering the station, and only passengers are allowed on the platforms.
Work to install surveillance systems on every subway train has started, but it's not clear how long the work will take, Mr Shao Weizhong, a deputy manager of Shanghai Metro Operation, told Shanghai Daily.
Further anti-terrorism measures will include making emergency lamps and gas masks available at all subway stations and training staff for a possible attack, the newspaper reported on Sunday.
Shanghai will host nine men's football matches and three women's matches, and more than 440,000 tickets have been sold so far, Vice-Mayor Zhao Wen told the state-run Xinhua News Agency in a report on Sunday. -- AP
2 weeks ago I came from Singapore through Pudong T2, with dried and wet foodstuffs (ie chicken rice!), dvds etc. Bags were scanned and no issues there. Perhaps they are vigilant on other things like the anti-terrorism items as stated above. |

I usually have some boxes of Ginger Snaps, Digestives or Pringles for late night arrival food. I was once stopped by guards/dogs who pounced on it. Opened the suitcase, they saw the sealed stuff and then let me repack it.

Whatever they decide.
Favourite this year - was no hot sauce in hand carry flying from Hainan.
Which actually meant, no hotsauce in hand carry, unless you bought it from the overpriced concession stand about 10 meters from the security check-in.
This meant that I got to send my secretary back with our vacationing staff's collection of hotsauce, and check that in. They did let me finish my as then unopened but against the rules cold can of coke while I was waiting for her to come back though. |

Arrival was a bit slower than usual. They are definately screening everyones' suitcases and carry on luggage when exiting the arrivals. Also the check-in bags' screening *before* they arrive on the belt seems to be taking more time as many many people were waiting for suitcases 40 mins after clearing immigration. |

I came in on July 24th, had whiskey (not more than I was allowed) Pot Noodles (very disappointing, they have taken the artificial stuff out and it tastes super bland now) Caesar Salad dressing (so much cheaper to bring it in) and Ann Summers Furry Love Cuffs.
Food was no problem at all, not so the cuffs. I made the mistake of saying 'Oh those! They're for my girlfriend'
'YOUR GIRLFRIEND?!?!?!?!?'
But once he saw they were basically toys, it was ok.
All in all, very courteous and polite searching of luggage. I was a little embarrassed, but not too bad, and got to keep all my consumables. |

Not only fresh meat but any meat products (sausages etc) are banned by many countries including China, EU and Australia at least.
May I suggest that if any of your stuff are getting confisticated, please ask them to destroy in front of you before throwing into the bin, so that they can't re-sell them. Don't think they would enjoy ALL the western food but they can definitely sell them at very good profit.
Someone found a bottle of nail polish in my handbag which I have totally forgotten about when checking in for Beijing 2 weeks ago. Knowing it's a waste of time to argue I just asked her to pour the content before throwing it and she obliged without a question. |
