| Post subject: Pinball Wizard |
I miss Pinball machines. I know, i am feeling a bit old and nostalgic, but there was something about the interaction of man vs machine, machanical machine where physics still mattered. A silverball that interacted with man and machine within thelaws of physics to provide hours of deliquent entertainment.
I read an articel on a Pinball exhibition that happend this weekend in my home towm and it triggered all these thoughts. I miss playing pinball...maybe I just miss my youth.

I remember my dad making me a bagatelle board. Loads of nails in a nice pattern and a spring loaded plunger to shoot the ball. I was the coolest kid on our street, but I was only 5 and it was 1960.... |

To think that most of you are too young to remember the glamour of parting your hair in the middle, squeezing into skin-tite brown polyester stretch-knit pants and shoving your feet into platforms.
Too bad.
Sigh...we are getting olde. |

The Who - Pinball Wizard
Ever since I was a young boy
I've played the silver ball
From Soho down to Brighton
I must have played them all
But I ain't seen nothing like him
In any amusement hall
That deaf, dumb and blind kid
Sure plays a mean pinball
He stands like a statue
Becomes part of the machine
Feeling all the bumpers
Always playing clean
He plays by intuition
The digit counters fall
That deaf, dumb and blind kid
Sure plays a mean pinball
He's a pinball wizard
There's got to be a twist
A pinball wizard
He's got such a supple wrist
How do you think he does it?
(I don't know)
What makes him so good?
He ain't got no distractions
Can't hear those buzzers and bells
Don't see lights a flashin'
Plays by sense of smell
Always gets a replay
Never tilts at all
That deaf, dumb and blind kid
Sure plays a mean pinball
I thought I was
The Bally table king
But I just handed
My pinball crown to him
Even on my usual table
He can beat my best
His disciples lead him in
And he just does the rest
He's got crazy flipper fingers
Never seen him fall
That deaf, dumb and blind kid
Sure plays a mean pinball
|

Trivia: Tommy's Holiday camp in the movie was filmed in an Georgian hill fort called Fort Widley on the downs above Portsmouth. 4 were built on the downs and a number at sea in the Solent. They were originally built as a defence against Napoleon by the then Govt of Lord Palmerston and were known as Palmerston's follies as they nearly bankrupted the country. |
