| Post subject: Fertility centres in Shanghai? |
Hi
I am trying to find out which is the best fertility centre in Shanghai for IUI/ IVF. I hear/ read Ruijin Hospital is good but I can't get through to anyone English speaking on the phone numbers I've found.
Does anyone have a phone number for Ruijin's fertility section? - or would you recommend anywhere else? - Puxi would be the most convienient...

Emailed Peace Maternity and got a nice reply from Dr Sun. Staff speak English and they offer IUI, IVF and ICSI. If their sucess results are correct, they are doing very well! Will try and find the email and PM it to you. Good luck! |

| Post subject: I've used Ruijin for the past few months |
I got my own treatments in Ruijin. They are the same folks from RuiDong in Pudong but they plan to move all their staff eventually to Ruijin over the next year. Timeline unknown.
The doctor I saw spoke only Chinese, but her young intern speaks some halting English. I speak reasonable Chinese so managed to navigate the system and the medical terminology...with the help of a dictionary 
Like all Chinese hospitals the experience can be a bit daunting, however they have a special out patient department that helps you make more exclusive appointments with the chosen doctor. Appointment times are limited because the doctors take their rotations on certain days at Ruijin and then other days at Ruidong. Thus they can only see you in the exclusive departments when they are free to see you. For example my doctor works Mon full days and Wed mornings. So can only do special appointments on Wed afternoons. So I gave up on the special department appointments and made direct appointments with her at her regular slot in Ruijin and saved myself some money as well.
Forget insurance.
Normal rates:
Ultrasound 33RMB
Phone in appointment at Ruijin 20RMB
I vaguely remember the 'special' appointment was some around 250RMB
Their screening procedure is pretty much the same as other fertility centers (I used the one in Singapore before I moved here). Ultrasound, followed by 3rd day blood screen for FSH, LH, progesterone etc. Male screening. Check for sperm antibodies etc.

thanks for that Olivalee. You said you went to a centre in Singapore, we're going there this month for a visit/ possible move - which fertility centre would you recommend for IUI/ IVF? Also, do you know if there's a waiting list for IVF?

Hey I got IVF in March-April this year for the first time in my life at Peace Maternity. And my doctor was Dr. Sun. He is pretty good guy. Long story short, mine didn't work.
IVF Cost was around RMB 26,000 and probably it's the best fertility treatment you could get in China at the moment. Actually I had two IUI treatments last year at the same clinic and they didn't work out for me either. I wouldn't say all these treatment didn't work because of the medical service stardard here. Oviously I have problem getting pregnant and it is really hard to say why I or any other people with fertility issue do have this problem.
After comparing the procedures done at Peace Maternity here and other countries with more "advanced" medical services, I've learned that only difference is the duration of embryo culture. While more advanced facilities can offer maybe 3-5 days of culture after fertilization at their lab, Peace maternity only do 2 days of culture. I've learned that longer culture could possibly increase the chance of successful pregnancy.
Well, for now I've stopped all western fertility treatments and am actaully trying out Traditional Chinese Medicine at Ruijin Hospital. They do have fertility specialized TCM doctors who only speak Chinese. I do speak some Chinese and manage to communication with her. After failing all possible medical treatment, I realize what I really need to do is try real hard to improve my general health. I run, do Pilates and eat better. Without healthier me, how much artificial hormones I inject myself or how much money I spend for expensive procedures, it doesn't matter. It will not work. Now I know that. Lesson was learned hard way....
Also I want to tell you, going to local hospital, it's not going to be easy. I will just give you one example (out of so many of those), there was one time I was at the waiting area, one of the nurses wanted to do some sort of service survey with waiting patients. I didn't want to do it, so I told her I couldn't read Chinese, which was kind of true. She said, "it's okay I will read the questionnaire for you." And she really read me all the questions like "have you ever been pregnant before?", "have you ever had an abortion before?" and "Does your husband have problem with erection or ejeculation?" in front of 100 other patients in waiting area and I had to answer them as quiet and fast as possible to avoid further embarrassment. If I wanted to explain why I didn't want to answer and end up having some sort of disagreement with her in Chinese, I might have attracted bigger audience. =(

I remember when I went to American Obgyn in Huashan road for my pregnancy checkup, I was told that in the same building, there is a Japanese clinic that does IVF. Maybe you can check it up |

Jiai genetics and IVF institute has not been mentioned yet; that's where I had my treatment and thanks to them we have children today
I had a successful ICSI there in 2006 (I had the standard protocol: stimulation, egg retrieval, ICSI, and transfer, and then frozen storage for the surplus).
Compared to the comment above on Peace Maternity, they are a specialised center for IVF, so egg culture up to 5 days is possible (called the blastocyst stage).
I think it's an excellent and efficient IVF center, one of the best you can find in Shanghai.
The doctors are experts and the nurses are qualified, most of them are very nice, and the processes are routined and organised.
There is no VIP section but the rooms for consultation and examinations are private, clean and comfortable (kind of "semi-private" for ultrasound) and the rest of the environment is “ok”, better than a local Chinese hospital anyway.
The advantages are that they are specialized in IVF, their protocols are the same as in other countries, using the same kind of drugs (Gonal F, Triptorelin (Decapeptyl), Progynova, Duphaston, etc...) so you can crosscheck information on English websites.
The cost is "expensive" but far less than abroad, around 30000 rmb for a total IVF treatment, depending on how much drug you use and which procedure you need.
The few drawbacks: It is a purely Chinese environment. You need to speak Chinese to understand the process and instructions from the nurses (or bring a Chinese speaking close friend).
FYI, Dr Dong (female) can speak English, enough to answer your questions on protocols and drugs and I think some of the staff can speak english too but I don't know who exactly.
After all, it is a center aimed to Chinese people, and though it is actually well organized, it seems to work like a Chinese hospital with a lot of patients around and not much privacy.
Also, the success of this center attracts a lot of patients from the whole East China region and the center is always crowded (but you can make appointments).
At first, as in many Chinese hospitals, I felt like I was just a "number" among the mass but afterwards I had a good relation with the doctors and nurses and they would recognized me every time I went there and were quite caring.

What about vasectomy reversal? Any of these clinics do that? What I really wonder if there is a way I can get my partner pregnant without having my vasectomy reversed... all I need is one little sperm, and I like being vasectomized! |

I've never heard of Ji'ai before. In fact, there's noboy, I mean, NOBODY whom I know is getting fertility treatment in China but me. So it's really nice to hear from you. Especially the part where you have children now thanks to the Ji'ai...!
I will definitely check out Ji'ai. Hope I can say that I have children now in a couple of years just like you. |

You need to get the issue of Shanghai International Family on one person's experience with IVF in Shanghai. She's a friend of mine and it was an interesting journey. She would say to you that you should also try acupuncture to cover the bases. Her IVF didn't result in a baby (they tried for 4 years) then she started acupuncture and after a month - she conceived. |
